Jonathan Mandell’s 8 ft x 3 ft Casablanca mosaic is now in the lobby of the Bryn Mawr Film Institute.

Jonathan Mandell and Scott Semple of Pacific Coast Designs are excited to introduce their inaugural artistic collaboration. The two artists, Scott Semple, a world-class ceramic artist and the artistic vision behind Pacific Coast Designs, and Jonathan Mandell, a world-class mosaic artist, together have created a masterpiece.

The ceramic vessel stands 4 feet tall and was thrown on Scott’s potter’s wheel in PCD’s studio in Santa Barbara, California.  After being transported east to Mandell’s Philadelphia area studio, the surface of Semple’s vessel was then jacketed by Mandell with a combination of glass shards, amethyst, citrine, ceramic and abalone, creating a bold and unique floral mosaic. The glass shards are convex and concave, allowing Jonathan to reform the topography of the surface of the ceramic vessel. As you walk around it, there are unexpected peaks and valleys that draw the viewer onward. Mandell’s approach to mosaic involves using the grout lines as drawing lines. His art is the intersection of painting, sculpture and drawing.
